Our circular economy projects are fostering the development of a more resilient community.

In partnership with our regional ally, Synergie Économique Laurentides, we initiate and collaborate on impactful projects tailored to our community.

Local Supply Chains

Completed on March 31, 2025 – This project aims to optimize local loops within the industrial zones of the Laurentians to enhance economic and environmental resilience while addressing current challenges such as rising energy and raw material costs, American tariff threats, and the region’s need for competitiveness.

To achieve this, Synergie Économique Laurentides will support businesses across four key intervention areas:

  • Local Sourcing
  • Local Industrial Synergies
  • Collective and Local Energy Loops
  • Agricultural Infrastructure (rooftop greenhouses and urban agriculture)

This initiative is in collaboration with CAE Rive-Nord, the City of Saint-Jérôme, and the MEIE.

Circular Supply Chains

Completed on March 31, 2025 – The project aims to consolidate and develop new residual materials collection routes in order to strengthen the supply chains of Quebec recyclers and manufacturers.

Supporting businesses in our region will help to:

  • Strengthen the supply chains of Quebec recyclers and manufacturers;
  • Reduce the amount of residual materials sent to landfill;
  • Increase the proportion of Quebec-made and responsibly sourced products purchased;
  • Raise awareness among value chain stakeholders of the importance of keeping materials circulating locally in a closed loop.

In collaboration with CAE Rive-Nord, the City of Saint-Jérôme and the MEIE.

Supporting Local Food Businesses

Completed in March 2024 – Supporting businesses in the food sector in adopting sustainable practices.

As part of this project, we provided training and support to businesses on a variety of topics based on their needs:

  • Eco-design of food packaging;
  • Reducing food waste;
  • Implementing a deposit-return system;
  • Reducing packaging at the source with consumers;
  • Information on regulations banning single-use plastics.

The “Generate More Profit by Reducing Waste” training is available online (in french) for people working in food preparation.

Recycling and Repurposing Plastics

Completed in March 2024 – This project supported businesses in adopting new sustainable practices to promote the circular use of industrial plastics.

The project aimed to:

  • Continue supporting participating businesses;
  • Develop an overview of two key sectors—microbreweries and dealerships—to better understand the types of materials they generate;
  • Set up the “Plastique à bateaux” project for summer 2024;
  • Raise awareness of plastic-related issues and circular economy strategies that businesses can adopt.

From January to March 2024, in our region:

  • 12 new businesses were contacted;
  • 6 planned to participate in the “Plastique à bateaux” project in summer 2024;
  • 6 others received support for other types of plastic.

In collaboration with CAE Rive-Nord.

Completed in December 2023 – Identifying orphan plastics that cannot be recycled through curbside recycling programs and the stakeholders involved in the recovery and recycling value chain.

Launched in 2017, this extensive SEL project focused on four sectors (manufacturing, commercial, agricultural and boat wrap) and aimed to:

  • Set up a pilot project for collecting plastic film and ensure that collection could continue in the years to come;
  • Identify types of plastic that were not being recovered but had potential value for recyclers in the region, and assess opportunities for new collection programs;
  • Raise awareness among value chain stakeholders of the importance of keeping plastic materials circulating in a closed loop, from responsible sourcing to the integration of recycled content.

Since 2017, the SADC des Laurentides has specifically supported the boat wrap recycling component of the project in its region.

 

Mapping of Recycling Services in the Laurentians

Completed in March 2024 – To take a proactive approach to reducing the environmental impact of businesses in our region, we helped develop an overview of recyclers serving the Laurentians.

This overview will support circular economy initiatives in our region by making it easier to identify local solutions and gaps in available services.

  • 71 recyclers were identified.

Window and Door Dismantling Platform

Completed in March 2023 – More than half of the materials received at Quebec’s ecocentres come from the construction sector. Doors and windows account for a significant share of these materials. Unfortunately, due to a lack of recovery options, most are currently sent to landfill.

Two pilot sites were set up in the Laurentians, in Sainte-Agathe-des-Monts and Mirabel, to test the dismantling of windows and doors and assess the feasibility and cost-effectiveness of the process.

  • 1,143 units dismantled (17.3 tonnes)
  • 14.7 tonnes recycled or repurposed
